I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t taken an Ativan two hours ago. Ha.
So…yeah. It looks like the Red Cross is sending me out on Monday, and if not Monday, Tues. Not sure yet where too. I’ll try to holler here before I go.
I’m stoked. And nervous. And I raced around earlier this evening trying to buy warm clothing because I’ve never really been anywhere cold in the winter. And after that, the jitters set in. Holy, holy, cow.
I took the health care worker class today. It was good because it covered our scope of practice — we’re really only doing BLS (basic life support) stuff and keeping people keeping on. If people need IVs or start to go south, we call 911 and send them off, which is nice to know. I had visions of running a triage unit, and that was daunting. I can do CPR if I have to, but I’d really rather not. It’s one thing to (attempt to) be a hero on my home turf — but all I want to do on this deployment is keep my people safe and my head down.
The shelter conditions are apparently rough. Rough rough rough. Some places don’t have enough cots, or enough blankets, they told me to bring my own sleeping bag for sure.
I pretty much cannot believe I am doing this. At least not so soon. Dang.
But my husband is amazing as always, he’s super supportive. And my bosses and coworkers said, “go for it!” and my family is very proud. And where I work is freaking intense in its own way — if I can make it there, I can make it anywhere ;). (You might have noticed from my books that Y4 is pretty chaotic and full of “strong personalities” — there’s a reason for that, ha! ;)) And I know from becoming a nurse and floating to all the ICU units in the hospital, you just fake it till you make it…and eventually you do make it. It’ll be OK.
So I’m still excited. And wisely scared. And hopefully warmly enough packed!
No guarantees I’ll have internet where I’m at, or even electricity, really. I’ll update when/if I can. If you want to follow along I’ll be tweeting about it, for as long as I have phone juice and Sprint service ;). I’m CassieY4 on twitter.
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!! And also yay! And EEEEEE!
