Retronurse: the introduction

“No! I will not let you return to a life of shaving wieners and dodging knife attacks from meth heads!” — Leslie Knope, Parks & Rec, to Ann, an RN

So my write-up in WIRED yesterday mentioned that I used to talk about nursing stuff in my blog.

Long ago and far away I did.

I miss it.

What happened? Well, I figured I’d be a public figure eventually once my books sold, which (eventually) they did. And while I don’t take my personal privacy as seriously as I probably should, I’m obsessive about my patient’s privacy.

And, not to get all “I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion…” on you all, that quote from Parks and Rec up there isn’t all that far off from the truth. The stuff that happens in my books is a pale comparison to what I’ve learned to cope with in real life.

I’m a more stoic person now than I used to be. But it was not always so. Once upon a time I was in nursing school and everything was new and I was! So! Excited! about everything, and I did keep a journal then.

I think it might be interesting to revisit some of those older less jaded times, in a highlight reel, and maybe for me to comment about what I know now about my job versus what I knew then.

(To people who’ve stayed with me this whole time, I apologize for the duplicate action. I promise there’ll be some new stuff in here as well to reward y’all.)

My current plan is to do this at least Tues and Thurs, since I can sort of set them up ahead of time. And also since I’m working the next few nights ;).

Thanks, and see you on Tuesday, I hope!
